Atmavikasa Centre Of Yogic Sciences is a research institute of Yoga, Philosophy and Indian culture. The shala is in a quiet neighbourhood about a 10 minute drive from popular Gokulum The Shala has two spacious areas for practice and is surrounded by trees bringing a strong and beautiful energy to the space.
It was established by Yogacharya V. Venkatesha and his wife Acharye Hema, with an intention to introduce the many facets of Yoga to the sincere seekers of all levels.
The centre aims to help students experience yoga as a way of life and not just physical exercise. Along with yoga asana the centre also focuses on the many other tools of yoga such as pranayama, meditation, kriyas, chanting, philosophy and sanskrit.
Yogacharya Venkatesh teaches a unique style of Hatha Yoga described as "Traditional Hatha Yoga with the Inspiration of the perfection of Iyengar and the intensity of Ashtanga" and Hema is in charge of yoga therapy for physical and mental ailments.
The classes are small with usually no more than 8 students and are tailored to the individual.
The centre offers intensive programs, back bending, yoga therapy training and yoga lifestyle trainings. The desired minimum time for practice is 4 weeks to allow a full immersion and benefit from the practice.
There is no accommodation at the shala but most students stay with families in the neighbourhood who provide a room and food. Students have the unique and rare opportunity to live amongst and experience Indian life.
