Shankar Prasad Foundation was set up to create a Spiritual Retreat and Retirement centre from this beautiful heritage house (on 2 ½ acres of coconut grove and rice paddy field) and to preserve the heritage of the local area as well as to ‘give back’ to the local people, for our own spiritual growth, thru seva (voluntary work to help others).
Shankar Prasad is on the West coast of India, 135km South of Goa. It is near Gokarna, an ancient temple town near beautiful beaches, forested hills and coastal farming.
You can come and stay at Shankar Prasad for short or long term retreats or even to retire amongst spiritually minded sadhaks (those doing spiritual practices) and sannyasis (monks).
You can come for weekend retreats to learn Yoga Meditation and bring your family so that they can enjoy being close to nature (organic farming/gardening) and to the elements of nature: sun, sea, sky, earth and space (your own and quiet). While you attend, say a Yoga Meditation Course, your kids can play and your partner can read and relax and they can visit the local temple town, an ancient Shiva Pilgrimage heritage town, join in the festivities. Enjoy swimming in the ocean, surfing, explore the natural unspoilt beaches at and near Om Beach and nearby trekking, cycling, boating and exploring the local environment and culture.
This is a retreat place not only for people but also for animals- we plan to accept destitute animals and will foster the traditional breeds (cows) that are dying out due to genetic engineering. So you will be able to learn to milk the cows and enjoy fresh allergy free milk and yoghurt.
We practice sustainable living (learn how to live simply), agriculture (organic and eco friendly) and housing. No poisons or artificial fertilizers. We aim for 100% self generated power - e.g.: solar, wind, gobur, Bengal boiler water heating, solar lights and chargers.
You can come and stay at Shankar Prasad for your own sadhana (spiritual practices for a Divine purpose), or you can come to learn Yoga Meditation from the tradition of Satyananda Bihar Yoga.
While attending Retreats on Yoga Meditation or your own sadhana retreat, you may like to consult with Ayurvedic experts regarding your Prakruti (ayurvedic constitution), Dinacharya (daily routine suitable for your constitution), diet and yoga meditation sadhana (yoga meditation and spiritual practices) for your doshas (characteristics). See calendar for Special Ayurvedic Programs. Ayurvedic massages, treatments and medication can be arranged.
You may also like to consult with expert astrologists from the Western tradition or the Indian traditon (jyotish) for basic charts and questions.
You can enjoy seva/karma yoga, by working to help develop and run Shankar Prasad, as we do almost everything ourselves from gardening/agriculture to cooking, cleaning, administration and teaching and/or by serving in our various compassionate projects:
a) to establish, maintain and run studentships, scholarships and render other kind of disinterested philanthropic aid to students, including supply of books, medicines, food and clothes, stipends, medals and other incentives to study, without any distinction as to caste, color, race, creed or sex;
b) to do social and charitable work for the upliftment of women, children and the needy in the local area;
c) to establish, develop, maintain and grant aid in cash or in kind to hospitals, medical schools, nursing institutions, dispensaries, maternity homes, child welfare centers and/or such other similar charitable institutions for the benefit and use of the general public;
d) to promote and propagate self sustaining and organic agriculture, eco-friendly environmental methods, systems and products and recycling;
e) to undertake cleaning and fostering and reforestation of the local environment;
We are now making an English Medium Pre-School for local children to give them equal opportunity and a firm foundation for their future education. We need donations for this community project.
