The Santosh Puri ashram is a unique and special place located near Haridwar in a peaceful and inspiring setting, nestled in the foothills of the Himalayas on the banks of the sacred river Ganges. There are many ashrams located in this region but Santosh Puri offers the ideal retreat for serious spiritual seekers who usually arrive here through word of mouth.
The ashram’s website reveals that its aim is “to create a suitable environment (ashram), away from the distracting world of desires and competition, towards retreat, life in simplicity and truthfulness.” The ashram certainly lives up to all its endeavours, offering simplicity and truthfulness in an ideal place of retreat which is free of worldly distractions. Located in a beautiful natural setting in lush, peaceful gardens, the ashram is a world apart. Here visitors can experience silence and consciousness. To make the most of a visit, a stay here should last at least two weeks or ideally a few months. Guest numbers are deliberately kept small to only about 20 to ensure intimacy and a family-like atmosphere. The ashram is a family in itself since the descendents of its founder, Baba Santosh Puri, live here and continue his work. Founded in 1978, today it is his son and two daughters who run the ashram while the spiritual centre is their mother, Mataji, who leaves a deep and lasting impression on everyone who passes through here.
This is a wonderful place to experience the daily spiritual life of an authentic ashram, where visitors can have the unique experience of yoga as a daily lifestyle. The day here starts before dawn with meditation and aarti before the morning hatha yoga class. The time after breakfast is reserved for karma yoga, followed by lunch. The afternoon classes in philosophy, ayurveda and cooking, are followed by satsang and then dinner. The day concludes with the evening aarti.
Meals at Santosh Puri are wholesome and vegetarian with the ingredients coming straight from the ashram’s organic garden. The accommodation is kept simple but comfortable.
The ashram’s exact address is kept deliberately secret until a booking is made to ensure a sense of privacy. A stay at this hidden gem of an ashram is always rewarding for the sincere seeker.
